Lake Oconee Hometown

Founded in 1786, Greensboro is the county seat and hometown of Lake Oconee. Greensboro is steeped in Southern history and tradition, and rich with elegant antebellum homes and churches. Greensboro’s “Gaol” is one of the oldest penal structures in Georgia. The historical buildings in the downtown area are filled with enticing wares, featuring antiques, clothing, gifts and jewelry.

Lake Oconee features more than 400 miles of shoreline and is an outdoorsman’s paradise. Lake Oconee is home of 10 championship golf courses designed by some of the greatest golf course designers in the world.

Historic Downtown Greensboro is located just north of Interstate 20 halfway between Augusta and Atlanta and only minutes from the shores of beautiful Lake Oconee. 
Greensboro was founded in 1786 and named for Georgia’s Revolutionary War hero, Nathanael Greene.  The town, touched by King Cotton, the Civil War, the boll weevil and the Great Depression always forged new beginnings. 

Today the historic shopping district features regionally known restaurantsantiquesart gallerieshome decor and gift shops. Shoppers search for the perfect antique or find handcrafted art created by Georgia artisans, all in a beautifully restored downtown where old-fashioned service isn’t so old-fashioned after all!

Greensboro is known for its proactive downtown development efforts.  The city is recognized as a National Main Street and a Georgia Main Street Community.
